Weathering with You 2019

Directed by Makoto Shinkai112 minAnimation · Drama · Fantasy · Romance

The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if taking its cue from his life. After many days of solitude, he finally finds work as a freelance writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then, one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky.

I was so excited for this film and I’ve wanted to watch it for a long time and I’m so disappointed that it really wasn’t as good as I thought it would be, as you can tell by the trailer the animation was amazing, and I feel as though this film may have been ruined for me by the fucking horribly made subtitles where they misspelled the word “girl” MULTIPLE times. But a film with such a strange and unlikely premise has to in some way make up for it in actually having a good story and believable characters but this film just doesn’t. I found it’s characters and their relationships just completely boring and the whole idea of her being a “sunshine girl” who can somehow control the weather to be so utterly dull, unbelievable and confusing that it just ruined the film for me. Maybe I was too exited and had too high expectations for this film, having loved your name and Having heard high praises for Makoto Shinkai’s follow-up film, but this really wasn’t what I expected. I have given this a few stars though and right now I’m trying desperately to find something I liked about this film other than the fantastic animation but I can’t think of anything. Maybe I’m just too dumb to understand it but I’m very disappointed in this film which is why I’m criticising it so much in this review, but I guess it did have its moments, none come to mind right now, but the animation again was quite good. Fucking hell I need to rewatch your name.  6.4/10
