I know film is so much easier and accessible now, but it would have been so cool to grow up as a film maker during this time period. Even going the cinema seems like such a different experience than it is now. Clearly a massive passion project for Spielberg, a semi autobiographical film. Really a love letter to film making and everything it’s done for him, along with a quite entertaining family drama. I enjoyed the whole film making aspect to it a lot and I really love Paul Dano so any role from him I am pretty happy with. The main guy who played Sam also did a good job. Enjoyed him throughout the film. When he started going to school I think the whole him getting bullied straight away for being small and bad at sports was a bit forced but it got better. Probably my favourite scene in the film was after Sam showed his film to the school, the chat with the guy who bullied him after where the guy cried and told Sam not to tell anyone about it and Sam said he won’t “unless I make a movie about it, which I’m never ever gonna do”, I really hope this was a completely true story coz if so that’s hilarious that Steven Spielberg didn’t break that promise till he was 76 and he finally made a movie about it. Really liked the final shot, “if the horizon is at the bottom it’s interesting, if the horizon is at the top it’s interesting” final shot the horizon is in the middle and then there’s a quick slightly comedic upward movement of the camera placing the horizon at the bottom, very cool. Overall a good film. I liked it. Paul Dano. 8.4/10 Did some research as I heard the film was semi autobiographical and I wanted to know how much was true, apparently it is quite accurate and sounds like it’s almost a completely biographical film, which is a pretty cool thing to do as a film maker, grow up and make an introspective film about your childhood and your love of cinema. www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/fabelmans/ “Although director Steven Spielberg has called The Fabelmans "semi-autobiographical," aside from the name changes, the film is more historically accurate than many biopics. Spielberg has conveyed that he avoided labeling The Fabelmans as being "based on a true story" or "autobiographical" because he didn't want to promote it as a movie about himself, which might be seen as narcissistic.” It’s basically a biopic but Spielberg didn’t wanna call it that coz it sounded too up himself.
