Actually quite an enjoyable film, the emotional beats hit quite hard, there were many aspects of it I think could have been better but overall it was a very satisfying underdog story that was very fun to watch.
David harbour was probably the best thing about it I think his acting was much better than anyone else. Definitely my favourite character, very cool, felt like a pretty perfect role for him and he was one of the main reasons I wanted to watch this so was happy to see how good his performance was.
The other reason I wanted to watch this was Neill Blomkamp as I studied him for GCSE film studies for his film district 9 which is quite good. Not sure on his directing in this but I think it was a well written story.
Some of the side characters could have been better I think. The antagonist character was a dick and it was satisfying to see him loose but I would have preferred it if he had a bit more to his character. Same with the love interest, their relationship was cute but there wasn’t much to it, felt like her whole character only existed for the sake of having some kind of romantic side plot, she definitely could have had better development. The dad was nice though, would have liked to see more of the brother in the final act but I loved the relationship with the Dad, though it was a little generic and predictable it still got me feeling quite emotional.
Kind of annoyed me that in the final race they brought back the racers that didn’t go through, was kinda just like what was the whole point in half the film where he learned to race through trial and error if one of the people he already beat could race one of the hardest races in the world without any of our main characters experience. Was nice enough seeing him again coz it was nice character development but I would have preferred it if he raced terribly. And there was another guy but he spoke like twice.
Overall a good story about chasing your dreams, had its issues but overall just a fun watch. I don’t usually like racing but this made me like it.
7.9/10
It kinda says at the end of the film but the true story aspect of it was kinda interesting as I would have thought I would have heard of him before if he was some big racer.
“The real Jann Mardenborough is a professional race car driver who was thrust into the world of real-world driving after winning the GT Academy competition in 2011.
Following his victory in the competition, Mardenborough represented Nissan at the Dubai 24 Hour race. He then went on to race in the British GT Championship, before continuing to race at other major events. To do this day, he is heavily involved in the racing scene.”
It says he was the third winner of the completion so I guess the film wasn’t entirely true, but he was the youngest.
Another thing was the tragic accident that happens in the film. This is a spoiler. But it really happened.
“It's a similar story when it comes to Gran Turismo's most shocking moment where Mardenborough is involved in a tragic racing accident where a spectator is killed. This really did happen, but took place in 2015, rather than shortly into his racing career as in the movie.
The facts are accurate though, as in real life Mardenborough was racing at the Nürburgring when his car became airborne on the Flugplatz which, as the movie states, translates as "airfield" due to the fact cars can leave the asphalt. His car crashed into spectators, injuring several and killing one of them.”
Really interesting story they should make a film about it.
