So fate is kinda confusing but it’s based on a visual novel. You can think of it like a telltale game, it has 3 different stories and which one you get depends on the decisions you make. This is an adaptation of one of the 3 routes. The rest of fate is pretty much just spin offs.
I haven’t seen the first route from 2006, fate/ stay night but I’ve seen unlimited blade works. This was pretty weird to watch because it’s the same thing as the series, but there are little differences that put the story in a different direction the longer it goes on.
Unlimited blade works is the Rin route, this is the Sakura route. UBW is really good but there are certain things that are kind of glossed over, particularly with Sakuras character who was expanded on a lot more here which was cool to see.
The important backstory where emiya calls on saber is completely skipped here, they turned it in to an opening credits montage which is a shame because it’s in unlimited blade works and is really good. I guess it wasn’t important to this route but that’s surprising considering it’s the whole explanation to how Shiro gets wrapped up in all this.
I do like how emiya finds out about what his father did 10 years ago which is shown in the prequel series “Fate/ Zero” that I watched first (probably my favourite out of all of them), that was another subject that was kinda ignored in UBW that I found it really cool to see.
But yeah this was ok to watch, it wasn’t as good as the other Fate stuff I’ve watched, but it was the same story just slightly different and an interesting expansion to the universe that I really enjoyed in previous shows. I feel like it was kinda perfect to watch after UBW as it skips all the important parts in UBW which I didn’t care about too much as I’ve already seen them.
There were lots of interesting new characters I hadn’t seen before and a lot of good characters that had interesting stories were killed off quite early which was weird to see.
Archer (the best character) doesn’t show up till like an hour in which I guess is because he isn’t as important in this series which will be pretty weird to see considering how big of a character he is.
I did like that the film was a little more violent and graphic than the show but all the Rin stuff was so important to the story and it was all rushed which wasn’t great.
Animation is still amazing, lancer vs assassin was so good. Think I prefer the shows tho.
Overall this is just the first of 3 films and it just sets up the world (skipping all the best parts) it isn’t amazing but I’m excited for the next 2 films.
Sakura is cool but Rin still best girl.
6.7/10
