Reading into the real story after has weirdly make me like the film a bit less. Apparently people claim Sonny didn’t really have as much influence over the deal as he and this film claim. Weirdly Sonny isn’t even mentioned in a lot of the videos I watched about what really happened, the agent who gets mad at him in this film for going to the parents, in real life claims to be the person that called up Michael’s parents and convinced them. He was also fired from Nike in 1991 by Phil Knight and went to Adidas. Which is kinda sad because they had a cool relationship in the film and Sonny also mocks adidas quite a bit in this film. Also I don’t think Michael and Sonny have any kind of relationship at all in real life.
The film was good though, my main issues with it were how weird it felt having them completely avoid showing Michael’s face, it’s done in the strangest way coz he’s such an important character and they just have him act like a moody teenager facing away from the camera. Those scenes all feel so weird.
The acting was great and the story was really interesting, there was nothing to it other than just the deal, I know in real life Sonny got married that same year and his wife was rich which is why he felt he could risk his job, yet there’s not a single mention of his wife through this film. Going a little into him or any of the characters personal lives in any way could have given this film a lot more emotional depth but it doesn’t. It’s just a film basically explaining the details of how the deal went down, complimented by great actors. It’s still watchable due to the interesting nature of the deal and the great writing and acting, but it does feel like something’s missing.
