I don’t know what possessed me to watch a silent film at 3am but I’ve never enjoyed a silent film this much before. I’ve tried watching a couple of Buster Keaton films such as The General and Sherlock Jr but the only Chaplin film I’ve seen is the great dictator.
I must have been in some weird mood because I liked this. It was a very nice and heartfelt story and I quite enjoyed watching it. I’ve never liked a film like this before, the whole non talking thing was always too much for me to deal with considering how many other films there are out there for me to watch with colour and dialogue, but it is kind of amazing to see what they were able to do at the time. Seeing the emotion we can get from the characters without hearing their voices was really interesting to me, I will always rather watch a newer film but I really like Charlie Chaplin because of his Great Dictator speech and watching this felt like a little look back on film history and was a really nice late night watch. Not too long too.
1921 actually makes this the oldest feature film I’ve ever seen.
Really hard to rate films like these as they aren’t really comparable to films I’m used to rating.

I might explore more into Chaplin’s filmography and give Modern Times and City Lights a go
