A couple of people have asked what I thought of this film after I watched it and I still can’t really think of what to say. So far I’ve responded with “meh” which I don’t really agree with. I didn’t hate it, the flash has always been my favourite superhero ever since I was a kid so I still liked the film. It had some really good aspects to it. Some cool cameos. There was one shot I really liked where Batman has his fist in the air and bullets fly past it. Flash in the films seems quite strong which he really should considering how OP his powers are. Nora Allen was really good, I liked her actor and the scene where Barry says goodbye to her is very moving and done quite well I think.
But it kinda feels like the film is missing a lot, or it’s just made a dumb decision I can’t really understand. First off there’s no villain. There’s Zod who is barely in it and he kinda feels like a filler villain. Apparently even the actor had no idea why he was in the film. There is also another villain that’s a spoiler which I guess kinda seems like should be the main villain, but he’s in 2 scenes and I can’t understand why. Where is the reverse flash? He’s one of the reasons flashpoint was so good and he’s not in this film. He 100% should have been the villain and I can’t understand why he wasn’t in it. And it just feels like they forgot to replace him with a real villain and it just makes the film a little messy. I think a big difference that makes this film so messy is the film is about him and his past self, which kinda works but also doesn’t. It has good and bad aspects to it, just like the film in general. I have very mixed opinions about It. The side characters seemed underdeveloped. The cgi doubles looked awful. It set up some obvious plot points that never ended up going anywhere, for instance I really thought he was gonna save the Dad that died in his original timeline, they show a shot of him and his son and I kinda expected him to go and change it but we never see them again.
I thought the fact in the new timeline Eric Stoltz was in back to the future. Kinda a cool detail considering in real life he was in the film but was fired and replaced. Cool detail.
This film always had to be really good. Considering how many people before release said it was amazing and the fact this is the DC’s chance to fix the whole universe. And obviously the very big elephant in the room of the fact Ezra Miller is the lead. I always liked Ezra Miller, they are in one of my favourite films perks of being a wallflower, so I was really happy to see him as the flash. Until he obviously turned out to be crazy. Him being the lead meant the only way this film could survive was if it was amazing and unfortunately it wasn’t. They don’t reset the universe well in my opinion, but they still have a chance. It’s left quite open ended so it just depends on what they do next. Kinda unfortunate they had a hard reset on the universe meaning they could recast every single actor they wanted except for the person they needed to replace the most, Ezra Miller.
Lots I liked about the film but yeah it’s really not as good as it needed to be.
7.2/10
After credits 2/10
Got told the after credits were amazing but they were really underwhelming, I guess still stick around and watch them for a cameo, but it’s a pointless cameo that doesn’t mean anything for the universe, it’s just kinda a hey look this guy still exists.
