Really unfunny introduction scene with a very unnecessary and poorly done recap of the first film that was extra annoying considering I literally just finished the first one.  Tall guy comes in and is really nice to them coz he’s really just a lovely guy, but they all act awful to him. Her boyfriend even says “how can you forgive him after his twisted mind games”. He basically did nothing wrong that is a bit harsh and instantly made me dislike half the characters of the film.  They all keep referencing her speech from the last film which really annoyed me as it wasn’t a good speech and was very self indulgent.  The first film the plot was very obvious and simple, but I didn’t know what they were gonna do for the sequel. Apparently the film is mostly about her imposter syndrome because of how good her life is now and she develops schizophrenia. I’m not sure why the film even got a sequel. I can’t imagine anyone actually enjoying the first one and a sequel really wasn’t necessary. Feels really forced. Them trying to recycle the Swedish guys character who they really didn’t use very well in the first place just feels really weird as none of their hatred for him has any validity whatsoever. If anything he has more of a reason to dislike them but he just keeps being really friendly and polite and gets treated horribly.  The whole voice in the head stuff feels like a very tired trope and it got old very quickly. Every time it happens it just really annoyed me. It’s actually ridiculous how nice this guy is to people who are horrible to him. short guy messes up his date and he not only helps cook the entire meal but waits on them for the evening. Waits on the person he lives with who basically bullies him for no reason, and the girl he broke up with his girlfriend for who then acted incredibly superior and stuck up, making him look like the bad guy when he really didn’t do anything wrong.  The fact that that speech at the prom made her some kind of popular girl is really unbelievable considering how bad the speech was and the fact that they are in high school.  Then the tall girl and short guy break up because of how stubborn and awful they both are tall girls friend first instinct is to blame the Swedish guy and say “you’d made a terrible therapist”, literally no part of that was his fault. I guess if the characters were decent people the film would have no plot and they wouldn’t be able to squeeze a sequel out of it. The really nice guys sister shows up who is also really nice and she reveals to short guy that the really nice guy was actually really nice the whole time. Dunno why nice guy even wants to be friends with short guy, he’s awful.  “So you’ve been judged your whole life based on your appearance and you just did the same thing to me” - I’m glad someone finally called her out on her shit she’s such a hypocrite it’s annoying. He seems like a nice guy but kinda in a weird way that feels really forced. He’s a bit too much. The new guy feels really unnecessary, she’s fighting with her emotions trying to choose between her ex boyfriend who is really annoying and the nice guy. Nice guy just feels like a more boring version of the Swedish nice guy. But I guess he had more depth because he used to be overweight.  We then have to watch short guy deal with how much he misses tall girl, which I feel like would be more impactful if they didn’t break up for a really stupid and annoying reason.  I don’t know if it has become clear yet from this review but I really like the nice Swedish guy. He’s very nice. I like him a lot more in this film than I did in the first film as all the characters in this seem awful in comparison to him.  I actually quite like her sister too she’s quite funny. I actually think I like this film a little more than the first one. Most of the characters except the ex boyfriend and tall girl are more likeable, which is annoying as they are the main two characters and they kinda ruin the film with their bad acting and annoying character traits. Even the mean girl who started this film with no character development after the first film starts to become a little likeable and gets her own little redemption storyline. I think if I pretend this film is just a romance between really nice guy and tall girls best friend, it becomes a lot better. The theme of body issues and all that is ok I guess but this film doesn’t really handle it well which is quite bad as that’s basically what the whole film is meant to be about.  Even nice guys slight argument with the fashion girl that lasted 5 seconds is only brought on by him doing something kinda stupid because he’s too nice.  Tall girl then shows up late to her best friends birthday and her friend the whole time feels guilty about kissing nice guy after tall girl was awful to him and dropped him for no reason and had no right to be mad at all. The voice over just makes her more annoying.  Her panic attack was actually a kind of emotional scene but I feel bad for her parents that think they are bad parents because she made them feel like that when they only do what they think is best for her and have done nothing but love and support her. The dad saying “especially with parents like us” was kind of sad because he’s actually a really good dad and in the first one he had one of the most emotional scenes in the entire film. I do start to like nice guy and short guys friendship, makes short guy a little more likeable and brings him up slightly from being the worst character leaving tall girl at the very bottom. I still don’t like how he treated nice guy at the start and for most of the first film and I still hate his relationship with tall girl and hate how annoying he is but I love a good wholesome friendship in a film so I don’t completely hate his character anymore and I’m a little less annoyed now every time he opens his mouth.  Then we get her big voice in her head moment which is where I realised it’s supposed to represent her anxiety. This film is a pretty bad representation of anxiety. Then the most evil girl in the whole film who has been bullying tall girl friends most of her life proved that even she is a better person that tall girl.  We then have to watch her sing and dance for a bit.  Then the film is concluding with again the tall girl deciding she is really cool and amazing and talented. At least she didn’t give a speech to the whole school about it this time she just told her sister who she always makes out like only cared about her self when literally for two films tall girl has done nothing but make everything about her.  I do think this was better than the first film, the voice in the head kinda ruined it a little for me, but some of the side characters made this film a little less terrible.  Sorry this review is so long, me and Jennifer just sat writing about it the whole time the film played. This is probably the longest review anyone has ever written about tall girl 2.  I’d like to end this with an excerpt from Jennifer's review.  “Apparently her favourite book is “A Confederacy of DUNCES” by John Kennedy Toole. According to “In A Confederacy of Dunces, Toole uses the experience of Burma Jones, a marginalized black man, to demonstrate the way in which the American South's historical legacy of slavery and racial prejudice affected the lives of black people living in the South during the 1960s, when the novel is set.” Is she trying to suggest being singled out for being tall is the same as being singled out for your race? I think this is problematic if that’s the case. Maybe I’m just grasping at straws at this point though.”  3.0/10 1439 words
