I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Expected it to be a kinda middle of the barrel, average Disney film, but it was quite nice. The story wasn’t a nothing too special, the world looked amazing and was quite well designed, the characters weren’t too complex and most of the side characters were a bit average/ boring, but I found the relationships between the three main characters to be quite moving. It’s about a son who always felt forced into living a specific life by his dad, then his dad chose that life over him and disappeared, the kid went on to have a son of his own and wanted to be completely different and be a good dad. He ended up having a good relationship with his kid, he was there for him and he was a loving father, but while trying to be different he ended up doing the same thing as his dad did, then his dad came back and there were clear parallels between the two and how they treat their kids, it was just a really interesting family dynamic. It was simplistic, nothing incredible, but I found it enjoyable. It’s about the expectations and pressures forced on you as a kid and about the pressure to be a better parent than your own, and how this pressure can make you become the exact same as them. Very fun and interesting, as this happens we get to explore this beautiful and wonderful world the film creates for us, with lovable creatures such as Splat who was my personal favourite character. It was a very progressive film with openly gay characters and wasn’t too in your face about it, just treated it as normal as it should, and honestly just quite a lovely wholesome film, nothing too special, but definitely wasn’t bad and I had a good time watching it. Even made me chuckle a couple of times.
Also Jake Gyllenhaal (I hope I spelt his name right after saying it twice)
6.9/10
