So I finally watched the highest rated anime on letterboxd, spirited away. The only Hayao Miyazaki films I’ve watched are ponyo from when I was a kid and laputa castle in the sky which I watched last year, I think after this one I gotta watch princess mononoke and howls moving castle. First thing I noticed about this film after some bad parenting was the soundtrack was really good. I never usually notice the soundtrack of a film but this one really stood out for me. Another thing about this film is the world building and character design are amazing and it made the film more interesting. The animation is so unique, you can tell it’s a Ghibli film just by looking at a single frame, it’s probably because of my ponyo nostalgia but I love the way the water looks. I really liked all the characters, no face probably being a favourite for me, the old man with all the arms, the furry baymax (can’t remember the actual name, the big white thing, avocado spirit or some kinda food), the fat baby/ mouse and the little fly thing, and haku of course. The girl I thought was a bit plain and uninteresting but I came to really like her in the end. Really nice and wholesome movie all around and I think if I watched it as a kid I would have been obsessed with it. I would recommend a watch, maybe with your family or something. Also this is again an anime film which lots of people get put off by, but if it helps my friend who hates anime has watched every single Studio Ghibli film and loves them not realising they’re anime, anime is just Japanese animation and these films are really for everyone.
(I think all the other reviews saying this is the best animated film of all time set my expectations too high, it was good but it wasn’t THAT good.)
