This film has THE BEST choreography in not just the mcu, but in the entirety of marvels films.
So instead of a new Nova film, or something with the xmen or fantastic 4. We got a film for a character no ones ever heard of… Shang chi. I’ve heard bad things about the original source material and I had no idea who he was, so when this was announced at San Diego comic con I really couldn’t care less about him considering the madness they announced with the Tv shows and multiverse stuff, but after hearing some of the reviews and seeing the trailer, I ended up being really excited for this. I was supposed to see it yesterday but I had to go to my prom, so yeah I was really excited and it didn’t disappoint, the fight scenes look incredible, it’s like a Bruce lee film in the mcu, insane! The characters were ok, Shang chi himself was pretty cool and that was it, he had a kind of interesting backstory I guess. His best friend, I think her name was Katy, she was supposed to be his funny sidekick I guess, she really annoyed me even in the trailer and she was still annoying in this film…. But she was also kind of funny I guess (Not the funniest character though but I can’t tell you who the funniest character is as it’s a spoiler, he’s been in the mcu before and I want you to be surprised if you haven’t watched it yet). His father was probably the most interesting character, I’m just gonna skim past his sister coz I really didn’t care about her at all (though from the after credits it looks like she’s gonna be pretty important for the future of the mcu), his dad was a villain and a hero, a good dad and a bad dad, seemed kind of evil and was somewhat likeable. I feel like they could have explained it a little better, but I felt like he was the most 3 dimensional character in this whole film and the actor did a good job. He was in the right yet was the villain, I don’t wanna give any spoilers but I liked him and I feel like he’s a good dad, but he’s also the character they are trying to stop and I felt like this was done in a really interesting way.
The first half of this film was kind of predictable, I wouldn’t have minded to much but my friend kept tapping me on the shoulder and saying these predictions out loud, only to then tap me again like 10 minutes later to say “I told you”. It all seemed kinda simple, the bus scene was insanely good but other than the fighting and Wong and abomination showing up for like 10 seconds (yeah I had my hopes up for that scene so it may be best to lower yours) the story just felt kind of average. But then the second half comes and it brings us a pretty cool, more of a mythical theme to the film which gave us an awesome ending.
The final fight was so cool, all the fighting looked cool, but the final fight was an epic conclusion. The giant …. Is this a spoiler idk …. Creature…. That should be fine ….. the giant creature looked amazing and the fighting with all the rings was also really fun. Like a sci fi Bruce lee fight. Genuinely just a fun film, I feel like it’s going to be kind of forgettable, but this was the best origin film we’ve had in the mcu for a long time and Shang chi is a nice addition to the universe, really cool character and I’m pretty excited to see what happens next ( watch the mid credits coz wow)
There’s also after credits after the mid credits and they aren’t as good but still worth a watch if you care at all about his sister.
To sum it up a slightly above if not dead on average mcu film which is saved by its incredible fight sequences that were more satisfying to watch then any other fight we’ve seen in the mcu so far. Worth a watch.
7.9/10
