Self Reliance 2023
Directed by Jake Johnson91 minComedy · Thriller
When a man is offered a million dollars to play a game in which hunters try to kill him, he thinks he has found the perfect loophole: they can only attack when he’s alone. His only problem is that none of his friends or family believe the game is real. Forced to seek companionship in unexpected places, he navigates the bizarre challenge with humor, paranoia, and a surprising search for connection.

Interesting. Jake Johnson very likeable as always, he’s gotta be one of the most likeable actors out there, he does wholesome friendships with homeless people really well.
The film was interesting, I was kinda convinced he was crazy at one point. Some of the writing was a bit bad and the acting, particularly from his family who were annoying characters anyway.
Gata was in this for a bit, nice to see him in more stuff, he was in anyone but you too, slightly better in that film but good to see him nonetheless.
The characters relationship with Anna Kendrick was very cute, but at one point in the film they very suddenly just gave up on that aspect after a quite poorly done montage. I liked how the ending mirrored the start where he knocks on her door but it was still quite unsatisfying to not see her again at all. It was a good way to end it but would have been nice if she had at least opened the door, felt that it left me wanting to see more, quite disappointed they didn’t resolve their issues. I guess a mixture of that and the fact he didn’t actually get the money he was promised and his family were still being dicks to him at the end, but I guess we got to see Wally again and that’s all that mattered really.
I’m torn on him seeing his dad again it was a bit too casual considering the circumstances, I feel like I would have more questions and wouldn’t end it with saying I love you, more like fuck you for leaving. Although the simpleness did have a certain charm to it and is part of the reason why the character is so likeable.
Jake Johnson is the best. One of the best sitcom characters ever, he’s my favourite Spider-Man and now he is a director and I think he did a good job, I will definitely watch his next film.
