So I work in a cinema now and I got to see this for free. Probably gonna review every new film as soon as they come out from now on.
First off Matt Smith was great. One of the reasons I wanted to see this so much at the cinema was coz of Matt Smith. Because of my childhood and nostalgia, he’s like one of my favourite actors and yet the only thing I’ve ever actually seen him in is doctor who. Pretty happy he’s in more stuff recently and not just the crown. Anyway yeah he was great in this as expected, nothing exceptional, he’s just Matt Smith.
Edgar Wright is my favourite director of all time, which is the other reason I had to see this at the cinema. This isn’t the same as my favourite Edgar Wright films, it’s probably more similar to baby driver, i know the guy is like a horror fanatic or something, so this was fun to watch. Some of the dialogue was weird, I can actually give examples coz it kinda annoyed me and I remember
“Where you from”
“Cornwall(?)”
“I’m sorry?”
“ you never heard of Cornwall?”
“Oh I heard you… I’m just sorry”
I actually heard this line before when I was doing screen checks at work (everyone laughed)and it annoyed me because I’ve definitely heard that before in another film or show and that girl is really annoying. She was annoying for the whole film though and she was supposed to be so I guess this just made me hate her more.
——- I googled it and remember where this is from, she fucking copied it from friends. Chandler’s dad says it while performing his gay burlesque show in Vegas. It’s the exact same joke.
Another one was when the guy said in a really cringe way “I can help you stay awake” and then he said “what am I saying?”. This probably means nothing to anyone in writing but his acting and the lines were really unnatural and weird. He was likeable but his acting wasn’t that great the whole way through the film to be honest.
The main girl was ok but I watched old and I can’t unsee her in that role so she will forever be a child in a older girls body who is incredibly annoying to me.
The final scene was amazing, made it all worth it. Incredibly cool and intense, exactly what I wanted from an Edgar Wright horror movie. I don’t watch horror films too often. This is the first one I’ve ever watched at the cinema, and my second 18 film I’ve seen at the cinema.
In all, Last Night in Soho was fun, cool Edgar Wright shots, the reflections were cool, but it wasn’t as unforgettable as his other films.
7.8/10
