This was quite good. The marriage story mixed with this guy discovering his passion, while neither was extremely compelling in its own, together it made for a good film. I’m a big Will Arnet fan so his involvement writing and acting in this is really what made me so excited for it and he didn’t disappoint. Laura dern also did a great job.
Considering this ended up being set in America, it was a bit weird how forced the Liverpool stuff felt. There was one point where he was in the bathroom near the start and just starts singing one of their songs and I’m still not really sure why. I imagine John bishop is quite a big fan so maybe that was his input. He was also later seen wearing the worst Liverpool shirt I’ve ever seen in my life.
Bradley coopers character could have easily not been in this and it wouldn’t have made a difference. But he did a good job directing.
John bishop is a pretty random person to make a film about, his life isn’t especially crazy and there’s way more interesting stories out there. But I also kinda feel like that’s why it works. It feel so real and believable. Just this guy who found comedy while his life was kinda falling apart. I did really like it. As much as I love Will Arnet it I don’t see why John didn’t play him self, considering he has previously acted in one of the greatest shows of all time (doctor who).
Loved the scene where Laura Dern went to the comedy club.
Some of the stand up was funny. I hated the scene where he had his meltdown on stage. Felt forced and cliche and was super hard to watch.
