Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 2023

Directed by James Gunn150 minScience Fiction · Adventure · Action

Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

“Open the fucking door”  We are in a new area of superhero fatigue. Every mcu film to come out as of recent I’ve hyped up for myself and always liked them, even though everyone else hated them. I think I’ve been in constant denial about the state of the mcu at the moment. But then we have guardians 3.  Before I left to go see this film my roommate asked me, “what are you gonna do if the films not good” in which I replied “probably give up on the mcu”. this was the final straw in the marvel cinematic universe, and oh my god it paid off.  This was my favourite mcu film. Maybe that’s recency bias, but I honestly don’t think so, I have never experienced such a rollercoaster of emotions as I did with this film, and though as a film it’s overall reputation will be tainted due to it being a superhero film, I genuinely think this was an incredible film. I don’t think I’ve ever cried this much in the cinema in general (baring everything everywhere all at once) let alone for a superhero film. The feelings I experienced in the cinema watching this were on par with watching some of my favourite films of all time.  The way some of the character arcs were closed off, in every single one of the guardians, was incredibly done and I think James Gunn is a genius and I can fully understand why he was basically given the dcu. He really knows how to write the perfect superhero film. Adam warlock was a character I was quite excited to see as I love the character and Will Poulter, and throughout the film I felt as though he was quite underutilised and not developed too well, but by the end of the film even his character had me crying. The final act it was emotional blow after emotional blow, not all the jokes landed but some made me stop trying to contain my laughter and had me fully laughing out loud.  I fell in love with this film as soon as it began, almost feel like it’s a spoiler to tell you what song plays but it’s one of my favourites and rocket was listening to it and it set up the tone of the film and fixed how much end game messed up quills character in one sequence. I love crossovers more than anything but I feel like every single decision made about the guardians in other marvel projects should have been run by James Gunn first.  The villain, the high evolutionary, probably one of the best villains we’ve had in the mcu, his acting was amazing and I loved how much he tied in with rockets backstory it made him such a great antagonist.  The best mcu film in my opinion, maybe even my favourite super hero film of all time. The guardians are better than the avengers. I loved this so much I actually don’t wanna see it again right away as I don’t wanna spoil the experience I just had. I’ve been a big fan of the mcu for a while, since avengers came out in 2012 I’ve seen every single mcu film in the cinemas, and that was definitely the best experience I’ve ever had watching one.  Also can’t end this without commenting on how incredible of a character rocket is I love that little raccoon so much. But Peter, nebula, gamora, mantis and drax all had such satisfying endings to their story as well. End game made them seem less cool, but James Gunn has now cemented them as the best superhero team of all time.  8.8/10 After credits 9/10
