This was really weird and not really what I expected. It started off really fun, the concept is so unique and interesting and I was really enjoying it. I especially found the editing to be really well done. The first act of this movie was a great watch.
Then it switched up a little bit and it got a little depressing, but not in a fun way more in a way that makes you want to stop watching. The character wasn’t even likeable at all which was surprising as it was Nicholas cage. He was quite likeable at first, though maybe a little annoying, until he made the really weird decision to cheat on his wife that I didn’t really understand as it felt a little out of character based on what we knew about him so far. so yeah it’s hard to feel bad for him, it just made me feel kinda annoyed, which wasn’t really fun.
It turned into this weird cancel culture film where all the characters started acting really weird and it didn’t feel justified or understandable at all the way they all treated him. Then his life just started falling apart and the plot becomes more and more unnatural and uninteresting and felt more rushed. It just kinda made me wanna stop watching. Like all the stuff with the dream device and him in France, it just felt so forced to me. All the side characters as well just start acting so weird towards the end like they were different people. Even Michael Ceras character just felt completely useless at the end like he didn’t even really need to be there anymore. It felt so weird how quickly everyone turned on him, especially his class who all liked him at first. Just felt strange that none of the characters had any sense to not treat him like shit because of something that happened in their dreams. The way the whole class switched up on him and started acting like assholes basically forcing him out of his job felt so strange and forced.
The concept is really cool but it felt like they didn’t really know what to do with it after the first act and it really fell apart towards the ending.
The final scene was nice but I really didn’t care about his relationship with his wife towards the end as all the problems that led to that scene felt so forced.
Not a terrible film but a bit disappointing given how infesting the concept was and how cool the cast is. Maybe I just didn’t get it, just a lot of the writing decisions felt really strange to me. But people seem to like it and it’s still an interesting concept so would maybe still recommend it to people.
6.2/10
Now realising the director did “sick of myself” maybe I should have scene how the film ended up coming.
