So every year or two pretty much I rewatch the entirety of the mcu. Doing it this time chronologically starting with this film.
When I did this during covid I managed to beat all my records, watching 7 films in one day and 58 films in just one month.
Not one of my favourites of the mcu films. I have it ranked at 33 in my marvel films list and 23 in just my mcu rankings. It’s an ok film. Red skull is definitely an under-utilised villain in the mcu and I hope we get to see him again properly (I know he’s been in it a couple of times since but that wasn’t really red skull) Steve looks weird as fuck at the start, but this film actually makes me kinda appreciate his character development a lot more and I really like his relationship with Peggy. Howard stark is also a very likeable character and I think Tommy Lee jones was quite good aswell. It’s a pretty simple, run of the mill, basic origin mcu film and captain America can be quite boring sometimes, but the film still kinda holds up and it’s watchable. Seen this so many times I’ve lost count and I don’t love it but I can still rewatch it pretty easily. I love Sebastian Stan and this is the most normal and likeable his character gets, so I enjoyed him in this.
Only mcu film set so far in the past so respect it for that. When cap comes back with all the soldiers it’s a very cool moment that is very satisfying. But it is just quite a simple generic story and I think captain America, though I like him very much, can be quite boring on his own without the rest of the avengers. His relationship with Peggy is the thing that makes him somewhat interesting to me in this. (I’m sure most people would disagree though, just my personal opinion)
Phase one is incredibly different and I respect these films very much, but they aren’t all Amazing as it’s just the introduction to the universe we all loved up until end game and now everyone just likes to complains about.
(except me coz I controversially think this new phase is the best but I’ll get into that once I’ve rewatched a couple more of them)
I’m mostly just chatting shit as it’s 7am, I haven’t slept yet and I honestly don’t have much to say about this film, but I think this review was fine I guess.
6.9/10
After credits 5/10
(It’s sets up the avengers so very cool but the ending kinda does that well enough already so it was mostly pointless, also the exact same scene that plays in the after credits is in avengers so it’s really just a teaser, which is what the after credits used to be)
