BlackBerry is a film about the rise and fall of the phone company with the same name. Kinda reminded me of a show I recently finished called Silicon Valley, but if it was more like the social network, (one of my favourite films). It stars Glenn Howerton (one of my favourite actors) and Jay Baruchel (main actor in one of my favourite animated films) and it is directed by Matt Johnson (one of my favourite directors) who directed films such as The Dirties and Operation Avalanche. I saw this on letterboxd probably like a year ago and it seemed too good to be true. Honestly like the perfect film ever and I cant believe I finally got the chance to watch it because this was one of my most anticipated films of the year. As Expected the acting was what made this film for me. Glenn Howerton proved he is the kind of actor I keep telling my friends he is and I'm very happy about that. The actual story of the film was ok, it was very interesting to learn about the rise and fall of blackberry, the whole story was fun and it was nice to see Matt Johnson do something a little different while still keeping the documentary looking cinematography, but this film didn't really feel as innovative as his other films, which was fine, it was still a good watch, but it felt a little more simple and I don't think I would have liked it as much if it wasn't for my favourite actors being in it. I think the ending felt a little too abrupt and I wasn't really a fan of how it ended for Glens character, but the main guy looking though the boxes was quite a nice final shot. It was a really interesting story, I remember my mum having a blackberry as a kid, I never realised how much they fell off, crazy that they were once the biggest phone in the world. Even more interesting that they were the first ones to turn the phone into what it is today, before being completely blown away by Steve Jobs. My expectations were a little high, but mostly for Glenn Howerton who didn't disappoint. Can’t help the feeling though that something was missing from the ending. No idea what though, just feels like it’s missing something. I think maybe a better resolution between Glenn and Jay’s characters. Think the characters all could have gotten a better ending, Matt Johnson’s included. I will still forever love this film for putting some of my favourite people in the industry on the same project and for giving me the chance to see Glenn Howerton in a serious role where he shouts at people the whole time. Glad I could finally watch it. 8.0/10
