Adaptation. 2002

Directed by Spike Jonze115 minComedy · Crime · Drama

Charlie Kaufman is a confused L.A. screenwriter overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy, sexual frustration, self-loathing, and by the screenwriting ambitions of his freeloading twin brother Donald. While struggling to adapt "The Orchid Thief," by Susan Orlean, Kaufman's life spins from pathetic to bizarre. The lives of Kaufman and Orlean's book become strangely intertwined as each one's search for passion collides with the other's.

“You are what you love, not what loves you” This was really cool, it felt like we were really getting a look into Charlie Kaufman’s mind. I didn’t love this, I found it kinda boring at times, the characters were kinda dull and sometimes a bit weird. But I think the writing was amazing, it was incredibly unique. It was a film about writing this film, an adaptation of a real book that Kaufman wrote himself into just like he does in the film.  Kaufman’s character was really depressing. His loneliness made me sad, though it’s so fascinating how he wrote this about himself, making the character feel more real than any I’ve seen before, because he is real. I didn’t necessarily enjoy this film a lot I just found it so interesting.  Donald was kinda annoying sometimes but Kaufman’s character was relatable in a really depressing way. Hearing his inner thoughts weirdly helped me feel understood, I felt I could relate to him on many different levels. Fantastic film about writing written by a fantastic writer about a fantastic writer.  7.7/10
