As soon as I found out Charlie day was in this it became one of my most anticipated films of the year. I’ve had film shoots the last 3 days and now I finally had a break, and I celebrated by watching Mario. Sitting in the cinema I found myself almost tearing up because of how cool the film was. The soundtrack was the best thing ever, the animation looked so nice and Charlie day was in it. Jack Black was quite funny as Bowser and everything that excited me about the film paid off, they managed to reference so many of the Mario games, I haven’t seen the last of us but I truly believe this is one of the coolest video game adaptations of all time.
The story however was not so good, it felt very simple and predictable and something about the way it was structured just felt off to me. I don’t like how it was written, it felt like it was written just for kids, which to be fair it is a kids film but after puss in boots a kids film has no excuse to have such a boring story, especially one that a lot of adults who grew up with Mario were excited for.
Wasn’t a fan of the writing, but the soundtrack almost made up for it, every time a song from super Mario bros played I got so happy. And the cinematic Dun dun dun dunununununun nun. I know those dun nuns don’t mean much to you in writing form but in my head they sound very cool.
Overall I knew I would like this, and everything I wanted to see from it was really good, but as a film it’s not so good because of the writing, but if ur excited to just see Mario and hear some Mario music then you shouldn’t let the writing put you off, I’m still gonna see it again.
The best part about the story I would say is Mario and Luigi’s relationship. Luigi’s always been my favourite Mario character and now that my favourite actor has voiced him in the film I may even get a Luigi tattoo. Unfortunately Luigi wasn’t in it much and it just felt like they could have made it so much better if they had expanded on this relationship which was already one of the films best aspects.
Still cool tho.
7.6/10
Was gonna give it a 7.5 but one extra decimal point for Charlie day.
After credits 4/10 (felt very unnecessary, needlessly setting up another film in a way that feels very forced, just teasing one of the only characters we missed out on in this film, doesn’t really leave me wanting more. First after credits of bowser were kinda funny tho)
