Most people know who RDJ is. Mostly because of iron man. But have you ever wondered who Robert Downey Sr is? Maybe you know him already for some of his films, but he definitely isn’t as well known as his son. I looked into him a while ago and added a couple of his films to my watchlist as I found myself wondering who he was, but I still haven’t seen any of them. If you like RDJ or his dad, or you just wanna learn about a filmmakers entire career, this is a good film.
I really liked how it documents Sr's career, and RDJ's. It was interesting learning where they came from and seeing how important filmmaking was to them. It’s also Interesting to the relationship between the two. This film is RDJ's final love letter to his dad. I didn’t realise this at the time but Sr died on the 7th July 2021. This film is incredibly personal and it’s the final homage to one man’s career and his entire life.
It felt so real watching this. It was real. Seeing a man at the end of his life, talk to his son and make one last film about himself after spending his entire life making movies. It was kinda beautiful.
I think the film felt a little pretentious because of RDJ, but overall one of my favourite documentaries. Could have gone into more depth about certain subjects, such as the drug stuff, but I respect this film for being a final tribute to someone who has given his life to film making.
Chris smith is really good at making documentaries, this, fyre and Jim and Andy are all really good.
Made the ending sadder coz I didn't know he was gonna die.
7.9/10
Did the maths and I’m on pace to watch 635 films this year. Will probably give up on my film binge soon tho.
