Hit man review
This was a fun film to watch, I like the themes of identity and the idea of changing your personality like an actor. Glen Powell played the role kinda well, it was interesting seeing him get absorbed into a personality, but I don’t think they did a good enough job at selling how different he was when he was Gary, so the change didn’t feel too drastic. Maybe Glen Powell just isn’t believable as some nerdy and awkward guy.
All of the stuff involving the police felt really stupid and unrealistic, the romantic plot was pretty interesting and though I kinda like what they were doing for the ending, it felt a little abrupt. I feel like his character hadn’t done enough to justify his decision at the end and it didn’t feel like the right move for the character. Definitely feel like it could have been a great ending if it had a bit more build up. I like the idea in the character getting so absorbed in the role that he actually became a hitman, but the way it happened and the time skip at the end felt a little cheesy and un realistic.
Very interested to see how much of this is a true story as I guess he didn’t kill anyone.
While Hit Man is based on the real Gary Johnson, the movie’s larger plot twists and much of Powell’s antics are completely fictional, according to director Richard Linklater. “The real Gary did slight disguises but not the extent that we see in the film. I was like, ‘Should we really do a Russian accent?’ But Glen just pushed all of that to the max, and I love how it came out,”
As expected the core plot of a teacher pretending to be a hitman was the only part that was real. He didn’t actually kill anyone and stuff. Also he had previous experience with law enforcement before starting as a fake hitman.
Watched on holiday and it was a fun break from the heat.
