I have never liked horror films. They are probably my least favourite film. I like to think I know quite a bit about films, more than an average person at least, but when it comes to horror films even the average, casual movie enjoyer has probably seen 5x as many horror films as I have. It’s not that I find them too scary, I’ve seen so little horror films I would even know if I did find them too scary, I’ve always just found them boring, with crappy characters and lazy writing. Because of that I’ve missed out on what I’m sure are some incredible films that I am being extremely unfair towards, so I decided to take this month to educate myself, attempting to watch one horror film every day the whole month, attempting to beat my current streak of 19 days in a row watching a film.
Rec was what I decided to start with, as it has been a film I’ve wanted to watch for a long time, it being one of my friends favourite films, who calls it the best found footage movie ever, and I sometimes find found footage quite enjoyable, even though the Blair Witch Project was one of those films I’ve found so boring it put me off the genre.
This was definitely a good found footage film, it wasn’t too scary, but it was realistically filmed, which I quite liked, I appreciate it as a found footage film, but found it a bit boring overall, with no characters I really liked too much and not a very interesting story. Zombies overall I don’t think are that scary or interesting in my opinion, but I can appreciate a film like this that managed to make them slightly interesting again, that’s why Shaun of the Dead is one of my favourites.
Didn’t like too much overall, but it was ok, I can see what people like so much about it. I’m sure I’ll like horror films more after this month, but right now it’s not really for me.
