We Have to Leave Here Together 2022

If you don’t know who Joel haver is, he’s a YouTuber who makes short films and the occasional feature length independent film. He just casually dropped an hour long film of him talking to himself in a wig and it’s a film that made me feel more emotions than half the films I’ve seen this year.  I think this line will help you understand this film.  “You know what you never see in movies and tv? You never see somebody just drink a glass of water, you just take a big drink of water and just take it in”  “I’m sure there’s plenty of movies where someone drinks water but usually it’s like somebody finishes a big sports game, the championship match and they cut water, they cross the desert and they find water. You don’t see somebody just go through a hard day, a day that’s so hard that they just forgot to drink water that day and then when they finally remember they *drinks water* they just feel good for a second”  This film is that drink of water. It’s real, it’s a man talking to himself in a wig but after a while you just forget about that and your watching two very real people in a relationship talk to each other. It doesn’t skip an awkward silence, it makes you feel uncomfortable, you stick with it through the tough moments and through the not so tough moments, like when someone does something so simple yet so necessary and real like drink a glass of water.  I respect Joel a lot, he can motivate me like no other filmmaker. His films are so personal and it’s amazing that he puts them out for us to see, like we are really getting a look into his mind. It’s incredible.  This films about love, about letting your feelings get in the way of that love. About forgetting to tell the person you love what they need to hear or simply not being able to. Not saying I love you when they need to hear it even though you know you should and you know it’s what they need to hear. Not telling them what a great person they are, telling them it’s ok to not be ok, instead just sitting in silence, going about your day, having regular conversations and having to let that person deal with their emotions wishing there was something more you can do about it, wishing you could make them feel better. You can write them a poem or sing them a song but they tell you they don’t need that stuff. “I want those things, but I don’t need them” “Is our love predicated on being together”  This film was beautiful. It looked great, acting was great and there’s no soundtrack, nothing to take us away from the silence of that house, I loved it.  Joel haver you are incredible.  8.3/10
