Film review
Asteroid City 2023
Watched 4 July 2023
First time I watched this was by myself at 9:30 am at a 24 Wes Anderson screening. This time I gotta watch it with some friends and I think I enjoyed it quite a lot more. Maybe because I understood it more, maybe because when I watch a film with friends I find them funnier, or maybe just because I hadn’t just watched 4 other better Wes Anderson films right before hand.
The thing I appreciated more this time around was the black and white scenes. I still don’t like the ending with the whole “you can’t wake up if you don’t fall asleep stuff” with it then cutting to all the characters having randomly left astroid city, but other than the alien scene, my favourite scene in the whole film was the scene on the balcony as he talks to Barbie.
“Why does oggy burn his hand on the quickly gurdle”
It’s a story about being ok with not knowing what the point in everything is, I really liked that aspect of it. Maybe Wes Anderson’s smartest film.
The opening of astroid city where they show off the location with some really nice and smooth camera work was really cool but wes Anderson’s pans make me nauseous and that was a bit too much for me.
One of my favourite scenes was when the kids are playing the memory game, I really love the camera work as it pans from kid to kid I found it to be perfectly done and loved it.
Also one of the funniest characters was the “you dare me?” Kid, made me laugh every time, the emotional scene where he talks about why he always wants to be dared and then the dads like fine, dare you what and he just says some outrageous shit like climb a cactus, was hilarious.
Wes Anderson’s dialogue suits his camera work and his set design in such a unique way there’s no film maker like him and it’s always fun watching his films. This was good.
